Looks like he may have left a long long time ago. He hasnt been seen with any other cast in photos or social in about a year. Barney Harris, the mens basketball coach at Union Academy, was killed in a shootout with a Mexican drug cartel in Alamance County, North Carolina, deputies said. Barney Harris is the prominent British actor behind The Wheel of Times character Matrim Cauthon. Regardless, Harris will still appear throughout the Wheel of Time’s first season when it hits Amazon in November. His scant social media disappeared way back in January around the time they were going back after a covid break, and there were some twitter rumors way back then that he had left the show that people dug up today. Until more information comes to light, there is little sense in theorizing what may have prompted the decision. While Harris’ replacement is certain to get fans speculating, there is a multitude of reasons as to why he may have been unable to continue in the role, including possible scheduling conflicts or other commitments. Of course, this news doesn’t necessarily indicate any potential problems with the show’s production, and other series such as Spartacus have managed to successfully continue after recasting its central protagonist. Admittedly though, Mat Cauthon’s role as one of the “Emond’s Field Five” around whom the series revolves, is a much more high-profile character in Wheel of Time than any of GoT's recast characters were. Throughout its eight-season run, Game of Thrones recast several roles, including that of Ser Gregor Clegane, Daario Naharis, and Tommen Baratheon. While the news of a casting reshuffle may upset some fans, this certainly isn’t the first time that a major fantasy series has recast key roles. According to Deadline, the reasons for Harris’ departure from the show are presently unclear. Instead, the role is set to be taken over by actor Dónal Finn who has previously appeared in both The Witcher season 1 and Cursed, which is currently available on Netflix. Deadline reports that Harris will not be returning as Matrim “Mat” Cauthon in the sophomore season. And thats without even acknowledging the very real possibility that Donal Finn wont be good. With filming on season two already well underway, it appears that the core cast is getting a shakeup. If Barney Harris is a fantastic Mat and people fall in love with him as the character it is going to be a huge blow when he is recast. Related: Why Some Wheel of Time Characters Won't Have The Same Book Introductions Featuring a massive lineup of characters, the first season’s cast includes Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, Josha Stradowski as Rand al'Thor, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al'Meara, Barney Harris as Matrim Cauthon, Madeleine Madden as Egwene al'Vere, and Daniel Henney as al'Lan Mandragoran. After Amazon stepped in to co-produce and distribute the series in 2018, filming officially got underway in September 2019. So we will also be distracted to a fair degree.Originally announced by Sony Pictures Television in 2017, the series is being helmed by Chuck and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD screenwriter, Rafe Judkins. Instead of the giddy excitement, (well, there will be that I'm sure) it will be mixed with "How do we explain what Mat is about and explain about the actor?" And showing pics of Donal, we wonder what the response will be. Sarah Nakamura and Rafe might tweet BATTLE STATIONS! like they did on Sept 2, for fans to alert the public and retweet news of the panel, but our excitement is going to be measured. It's going to be a very different experience already when the 2nd trailer comes out. This has been confirmed by Amazon Studios. As I said a few days ago, I doubt footage of Mat will be whittled down in the trailer or show. Sadly Barney Harris has been replaced by Dónal Finn as Mat Cauthon in The Wheel of Time show from season 2 onwards. It's easy to speak of being over "the grieving process" or "moving on" when nobody has seen him in the role yet. New fans might fall in love with Barney, esp if he nails the role, no matter how much the current fandom " in the know" tries to forewarn them that this guy is not coming back. I tried to imagine someone else cast as Yenn or Ciri. This trailer in terms of length and content (as in there's dialogue, origional show music, and structure of the trailer) is probably going to be very similar to what we might be seeing on Oct 8th, or soon after that. Let's watch the 2nd trailer, and then the show, before we settle the question about "Is it a big deal?" I just watched the official 3-minute-long Season 2 Witcher trailer that Netflix just released.
